Eye on Education created literacy lesson plans that relate to the Common Core. The lesson plans are for grades 6-8 and they are ready-to-use plans. In less than seven minutes, a woman briefly explains what each idea is about and how they are assessed. They are found in Eye on Education's new book, Common Core Literacy Lesson Plans.
5TH GRADE: this website has writing prompts for several grades. The page for 5th grade has 50 writing prompts, each one differs in topic and thought process. To broaden the prompts, I recommend using one of the questions for one day then continuing on about the topic the following day. This will allow you to have more prompts and to go deeper into the topic.
7TH GRADE: this is the same website as used above, only this link goes to the prompts for 7th grade. I decided to add both because they are somewhat the middle grades between older elementary and middle school age. Teachers can make the prompts easier or more challenging, depending on the grade level. They are great ideas, check it out!
